I must say, the Bush administration and its puppets in Iraq never run out of ways to aggrevate the disasterous situation in Iraq.First of all, I have no sympathy for Saddam Hussein himself. Execution served him right for being the perverse, murderous tyrant that he his. However, rushing into killing the guy after a mock-TV trial on Eid day is absolute retardation! It further inflamates a war-ridden Iraq and, instead of serving Saddam with his much-deserved shameful ending, created a martyr out him for many people in Iraq and the Arab world.
The trial of Saddam, established under the supervision of an occupying power, lacked any international legitimacy or standards of fair due process. It is a puzzle that the US rejected any demand for establishing a recognized international tribunal. [history shows the success of ICTY in Yougoslavia, ICTR in Rwanda, and the Nuremberg trials after WWII in fostering national healing and reconciliation while at the same time serving justice]. Instead, it opted for a trial that aggrevated the Sunnis even further - alienate them from their Shia brethen - and will ultimately lead to more violence and counter-violence in response. It will always be seen as a "victor's justice," imposed forcefully by an alien occupying power. One can almost say the US consciously wanted to end any prospect of actually conducting a legitimate investigation into Saddams crimes or disclosing any truth!

How true, Lulu. It is time to pick up the cliche 'the dead do not speak'. At least they cannot give, in person, their side of the story. Saddam did not live to tell his side of the story on the role of USA in the atrocities of the Anfal campaign.
I wish I were so eloquent but you have managed in one small statement to say everything I feel is correct about an utterly insane situation.
I wonder if the world will slow down and the killing stop at some point?
count with me how many Arabic tyrant is there still alive.. you know what's the difference between Saddam and the rest, it's that he confronted the aggressors and responded to insult...his biggest mistake was the war on Kuwait, other than this I don't see that killing 148 Shiite in Dujail as a response to a coup is the ultimate capital crime... many Arab leaders killed hundreds of thousands as a response to a failed coup, remember Hafiz Al-Assad what he did for the people of Hammah. Remember what Hussni Mubark did and still doing for the Egyptians,... If Saddam was executed by a legitimate Iraqi court, no one would be angry, but to be executed by Shiite militia in a militia post not a death chamber, that's provocative and we lead to more violence, god forbid.
Some of Saddam's Mistakes:
1-War with Iran.
2-Intelligence & assassination operations within Arab Nations.
3-Anfal Campaign (more than 148 shiites!).
4-Use of Chemical Weapons in War.
5-Draining the Iraqi Marshes & kicking out the Marsh farmers.
6-Invasion AND Annexation of Kuwait.
Let's cut to the chase. Insane as it may be, the outcome of Saddam's 'trial' was expected by everyone, including those that mark him as a martyr. Whatever his side of the story looks like, the incriminating facts are the same, the man was a tyrant, and deserved what he got.
